Beyond Code: The Critical Role of Data, Expertise, and Communication in AI for MedTech

Introduction:

AI technology in the MedTech industry is rapidly transforming the way companies operate and make decisions, yet it demands more than just technical prowess. As we discovered at Smarteeva, a software company focusing on Post Market Surveillance solutions for MedTech organizations, the success of AI initiatives hinges on deep business and product domain knowledge, as well as the ability to produce clear, well-structured documentation. While coding and modeling are vital components, effective data categorization and strong writing skills ultimately have a far greater influence on a project’s outcome. In short, AI in MedTech is a team sport that thrives on well-prepared data, domain expertise, and first-rate communication.

Lesson 1:

One of the first lessons we learned was the importance of clean, well-correlated data. Although the significance of good data quality is widely acknowledged, in the AI space it becomes even more sensitive. For example, when we aimed to generate competitive analysis reports of a particular product category, normalizing market share data and aligning operational metrics such as reporting frequency allowed the AI-generated output to be more nuanced and accurate. By ensuring data was correctly categorized and consistently structured, we made the complex process of extracting and interpreting meaningful insights much smoother.

Lesson 2:

Just as important, if not more so, is having a thorough understanding of the business domain. In one of our projects for a global medical device company, we applied automated Symptom Codes to complaint descriptions using a fine-tuned AI model. Initially, the model delivered solid results, achieving about 85% accuracy. However, it was domain knowledge—understanding the products in detail and recognizing subtle differences in complaint descriptions—that ultimately raised the accuracy above 95%. Adding rules based on the insights of experienced business users proved more powerful than any additional coding effort.  Keep in mind, these rules are written in plain English by the business users.

Lesson 3

Furthermore, excellent writing skills have emerged as a surprisingly valuable asset in the era of AI. Models need well-structured, thoughtfully articulated content to produce effective results, and that means human input must be conveyed with precision and clarity. Today, if you already have strong writing abilities, you should consider yourself fortunate. If not, it’s wise to invest in developing those skills, as it will make working with AI far easier. Think of the technology as a tireless assistant that can do tremendous work—if it fully understands the instructions it is given.

In the end, while AI technology may be revolutionary, it does not operate in a vacuum. High-quality data, deep domain knowledge, and excellent writing skills each play a critical role in creating successful AI solutions for MedTech companies. By blending these elements together, organizations can unlock the true power of AI, simplifying complex tasks and delivering actionable, business-focused insights that pave the way for innovation and growth.
