The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, the rising geriatric population, and technological advancements in nerve stimulators have led to the growth of the Nerve stimulator market at a CAGR of 7.5% by the year 2028. Nerve stimulators are said to help patients with conditions such as Depression, Sleep Apnea, Epilepsy, Dystonia and more.
Spinal cord stimulation was first used to control pain in 1967. The technology has improved vastly over the years, to the point that they can now even be inserted with minimal discomfort. Spinal cord stimulation is a procedure that delivers low-level electrical signals to the spinal cord or to specific nerves to block pain signals from reaching the brain.
In 2023 FDA approved various types of Stimulators including breathing stimulators, Nerve stimulators and more.
Inspire Medical Systems got the FDA’s approval for two of its medical devices:
Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation is an implantable nerve stimulator used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. This approval expands the indications for use to include people with obstructive sleep apnea who have an upper limit baseline apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 100 (increase from ≤65 to ≤100). The approval also increases the upper limit for recommended body mass index (BMI) to 40 (increase from ≤32 to ≤40). The Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) that is also used to treat obstructive sleep apnea. However, this approval for the Inspire UAS system is to be used for a subset of teenagers with Down syndrome who are between the ages of 13 and 18 with severe obstructive sleep apnea (as determined by an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of greater than or equal to 10 and less than or equal to 50).
Prospera Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) Systems by BIOTRONIK NRO is an implanted spinal cord stimulation system intended to treat long-term (chronic) pain in the trunk or limbs that is difficult to manage (intractable). The Prospera SCS includes a rechargeable, implanted pulse (signal) generator that is connected to one or two leads implanted through the skin (percutaneous), a clinician programmer and a patient programmer, and an external trial pulse generator.
The NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System (DPS) by Synapse Biomedical uses electrical impulses to stimulate the diaphragm muscles of people with high spinal cord injuries who can no longer breathe on their own. It is used to strengthen the diaphragm muscles after they haven’t been used in a long time and then act as a breathing pacemaker to stimulate those muscles and allow for breathing without the help of a mechanical ventilator.
